Mariam Ghani is an Afghan-American artist, archivist, activist, writer, lecturer, and film-maker. She grew up in exile from her father’s homeland and her personal diaspora resonates in work that looks at moments where otherwise abstract political policy becomes manifest in people and places. A Brief History of Collapses (2011-12) is Mariam Ghani’s most ambitious project to date.The two-channel video, premiering at dOCUMENTA (13), addresses the complex histories of the Dar ul-Aman Palace in Kabul, Afghanistan and the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany. Mariam Ghani is a New York based artist, writer, and filmmaker. Her work looks at places, spaces and moments where social, political and cultural structures take on visible forms, and spans video, sound, installation, photography, performance, text and data. Mariam Ghani, Director: What We Left Unfinished. She studied comparative literature at New York University and photography, video and media at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She works as a visual artist, author, lecturer and filmmaker and has been involved in a number of short films, multi-channel installations, transmedial projects, live cinema events, exhibitions, conferences and For Contagious Cities, Mariam looked at whether the metaphors we use to understand illness have changed over time, and whether changes in how we speak about diseases affect how we treat them.
